walker said this show was like "scumbag mob psycho 100" and i can't think of a more apt description. the main character is a hair stylist/shitty assassin who can telekinetically control a pair of scissors. he keeps getting assigned to kill people but never manages to actually kill anyone and usually ends up helping them. by the end of the first season, he's still a bumbling selfish idiot, but now he's fully a part of his island community. the second season gets a bit more into seven's mysterious backstory and moves the plot forward from season 1's contract-of-the-week formula but there's still plenty of dumb gags.
is it still anime if it's from a chinese studio? i guess it doesn't even look like anime, the style is more reminiscent of regular show, and the art and attitude would make it feel at home on adult swim. the most anime thing about it is how fucking good the fight scenes are. the animation feels low budget but the cinematography and timing is excellent and would rival anything put out by studio bones (like....mob psycho 100???).
it's not a super serious show but it still has something to say beyond people with bird heads. seven is happy just cutting hair but his past and the people around him keep forcing him into a violent lifestyle he no longer wants. wow, why does this feel so similar to chainsaw man. i guess i only like one type of thing!
